No doubt! I love selfies too! They are a great way to show your friends and family your latest face. Or to get yourself in the picture with your favorite band playing behind you at the concert of the year. They will always be a valuable form of self expression in our digital world. But there is also a time and a place for them. Let’s talk about why they don’t work for your business, website, and professional pages.
While the new cell phone cameras are pretty awesome, they still can’t compete with an image that has been resized correctly to fit the platform you are using it on. Professional images, taken with a professional camera, start out as a monster size file. They can be resized to fit the specific parameters that will keep it looking great on any platform. Your phone selfie however has a really good chance of looking extremely grainy or pixelated.
A correctly exposed image really does make or break the wow factor. Most times when we take a selfie the light is awful. You either get raccoon eyes, dull, flat light, or your skin is totally washed out. Below is an example of a selfie vs. a headshot in the right lighting.
Also, notice the background of these images. While the new iPhone’s portrait mode will give you more subject isolation, most phones get everything behind you in focus as well, blending you right in. A headshot should focus on your face, not the background.
The angles you have available when you take a selfie are not usually the most flattering. Your arm looks super stretched with no hand, or your phone is still in the picture (add facepalm emoji here). So here are a couple of examples of…just no.
Selfies are great to show off your super sexy dress, or your new sunglasses, and your latest crazy roadtrip background. They are not, however, what you should use to attract clients, customers, your soulmate, or future employers. Build your brand authentically, but be professional on the platforms where your targeting business or employment. The outcome will be most beneficial with a professional headshot.
