I was in corporate for over 20 years and I never really felt like I fit in because I never felt like I could be myself. You're sitting behind your little cubicle behind your computer and you’re doing what you do all day. This is fine for a lot of people, but I knew that I wanted more. I was definitely the most authentically “me” person, I think in the whole building.
I've said this before that I don't pretend to be anybody that I'm not. There are times when you show up differently in different situations and you're like quieter than you normally would be, or because the situation calls for it, right. I'm always led though, by how I feel. I can feel other people's energy very easily. So, I do have to protect my own.
Being in corporate, I saw a lot of people really stressed out all the time including me. I chose not to be stressed anymore because it doesn't serve me, my life, or my business. But working in Corporate, they tend to put you in this little box. You have...
Who do you want to be when you grow up?
Have you ever been asked that question?
Not what you want to do, but who do you want to be when you grow up? Some of us still don’t know what we want to do or what kind of business we want, nevermind a deeper question like who do we want to be.
We mostly think about our purpose in life as what do we want to do, but I would love to invite you to think about life and business as who do you want to be.
We’re going to change our beings inside of us, how we look at the world, how we look at everything, it will change every single day. Then somebody comes along and throws a question at you that totally flips your mind.
Let’s not think about what you want to do but who you want to be, what is your purpose for waking up in the morning. This has nothing to do with business, but is a personal thing. Your brand story should include this too. Why do you wake up in the morning, what drives you to keep going, to keep...
This is a quick list of things that all entrepreneurs need to know but not too many talk about. Some are things I didn't realize I was signing up for but are crucial to being successful.
First, I did not realize as an entrepreneur you have to look inside of yourself more often than you are comfortable with because this is where most of the answers are.
Not one second did I believe that I would think that starting my business. We think that we have an awesome idea and that we’re awesome at what we do and think people will just come, but they don’t. This is not a business of dreams, if you build it, they will not necessarily just come. I’m not saying that it doesn’t happen for some people, but for most of us it doesn’t happen. 80% of the reason for that is us. There’s nothing wrong with us, but there’s so much growth and so much self development that happens. Look inside of you more often because that’s where all the answers are and...
This conversation with Melissa was amazing and totally worth the read. She drops the mic on how you can turn the negative self talk into your own personal cheerleader!
Jenessa: I’m here with Melissa Howard who is an international confidence strategist, speaker coach and empowerment photographer and she specializes in supporting overachievers who are ready to end their battle with self sabotage and regain their confidence.
Melissa: Thank you for having me
Jenessa: Tell us a little bit more about what you do, who exactly do you help and how do you help them.
Melissa: I started my career in healthcare and it was always instilled in me as a child to be a go getter. I was a perfectionist and I was so proud of that. Everyone wanted my life. I had a six figure income at age 21 or 22. I had a house, a car and a fiance. I had everything. But I just felt like I was chasing something that every time I've got it, I...
Thinking like an entrepreneur can be tricky for those of us that have been “employees” our whole lives. We haven’t ever had to think any different than, “I get up, go to my job, they tell me what to do, and I get a paycheck”.
Entrepreneurship my friend is a completely different game, which means you need to THINK in a completely different way.
Be totally honest with yourself...
Q1. On a scale of 1 to 10 how do you feel about money?
1 = "it's a huge stress in my life"
10 = "it's only a matter of time until I'm Oprah rich!"
Q.2 On a scale of 1 to 10 how in control of your life do you feel right now?
1 = "I have no control"
10 = "I have full control over my life"
Q.3 On a scale of 1 to 10 how committed are you to growing a successful business?
1 = "I hope I can"
10 = "I'll die trying if I have to"
This concept of the level 10 you is a version of you who has everything that you say you want. It's a future version of you...
What is your unique value proposition or, as I like to say, what is your sparkle?
This will be the core of your messaging. It tells your customers exactly what you and your business offers that no one else can and why you are the right choice to solve their problem. Really think about what you want to be known for. This isn’t about your niche so don’t put yourself in a box. This is about your messaging. Who are you attracting into your audience, who are you attracting as customers. Are you attracting people who want the value but not the pricetag? Or are you attracting the people that WANT to pay you what you are worth?
Are you watering down your messaging because your afraid to draw that line in the sand and say THIS IS WHO I HELP and these are the kind of customers I want to attract because you’re scared you will repel certain people or leave money on the table?
Not everyone is going to like you...AND THAT’S A GOOD THING! I’ve...
Why? Because busy means we can avoid fears and emotion and we stay in control or at least we think we do. Because giving up control, surrendering, or accepting that we are only responsible for the effort and not the outcome is f’ing scary!
As business owners we spend a lot of time thinking about the results we are going to get or the outcomes we want. How do we think we control that? With the effort we put in right?
So if that’s wrong, then what do we have control over, where do we want to be focusing our effort?
The actual outcomes and results….do not hang out here
Sure you can predict what the results will be, you can set goals, you can do your absolute best at all the tools and actions, but you cannot fully control the outcome.
Let me give you an example. Your...
Let’s talk about evicting the mean girl in your head. No you’re not crazy, we all have that voice in our head that pops in uninvited and tells us things that usually sounds like negative self talk. Going into 2020 we want a positive mindset. We don't want or need to be talking crap about ourselves to ourselves. We are our own worst critics and sometimes we don't even realize that we're doing it, it's an automatic thought that just pops up in your head and you don't even mean to think it, but you do.
You have to realize that the thought is present and you have to know that those thoughts are negative thoughts. You know the ones, “I’m not good enough”, “I can't do this”, “I am stupid.”
Be very careful of your I AM statements. Whatever you say after I am, you are telling yourself you are and your brain believes what you tell it period. So when you say I am,...
A positive mindset is something I have been working a lot on lately. Not because I am not a positive person, but because I want to be able to change the way I approach negativity.
Most of us probably don’t realize that the negative experiences we have had in our lives often influence our decisions. Our brains learn from difficult or painful experiences, so it naturally wants to do whatever it can to protect us from a recurrence of that feeling.
Our lives are a reflection of our attitude. The energy you, or anyone else, brings with them is contagious. You get what you give. I know this is so true for me. If there is friction in my house, the kids are stressing me out, or my fiancee is in a bad mood, it’s really difficult for me to be positive.
Now I am not saying that you should run around with daisy chains in your hair singing Kumbaya all the time. Everyone has emotions. But sometimes if we look at things a little differently we will see...
